Definition of Work: This position consists of highly responsible, managerial and
supervisory position involving the administration of the judicial process for appeals,
disciplinary actions, transfer applications, jurisdictional transfers, petition for writs,
motions for bond, petitions for reinstatement, appeals form the decisions of the Board of Law Examiners and petitions for review.
Salary/Benefits: Starting salary range $71,423 to $85,407 annually depending on
experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for full benefits and leave
accruals provided through the State of Missouri.

MISSOURI COURT OF APPEALS – WESTERN DISTRICT
Position Title: Staff Counsel
Work Duties: Review all notices of appeal and records on appeal for jurisdictional and substantive issues, prepare show cause correspondence, and make recommendations to the Court regarding such issues. Review cases for initial determination of oral argument or submitted on brief track. Review appellant’s briefs for compliance with Court Rules. Review Mandates for accuracy and assessment of costs. Provide legal research and recommendations on various motions filed before Court when requested by the Chief Judge or Clerk of the Court. Serve as legal advisor to the Court on employment issues, vendor contracts, rules drafting, and other special projects. Serve as the liaison between the Court and attorneys, pro se litigants, and the public in general and answer questions about practice and procedure before the Court. Edit and maintain the Missouri Court of Appeals Quick Guide to Appellate Rules (available on the Court’s website). Perform duties of Clerk of the Court in the Clerk’s absence, including management and supervision of Clerk’s office staff, motion review, and opening court sessions. Present Continuing Legal Education programs on appellate issues.
Salary/Benefits: Current salary range is $74,700 – $76,452 annually. This position is eligible for full state employee benefits.
Education and Experience: Candidates must have a law degree and be in good standing with the Missouri Bar, or that of another state; and if not a member of the Missouri Bar, he or she is eligible for admission. Candidates must have five years of experience with significant experience in appellate practice.
